Megatherium

Megatherium rose on its hind legs and the world looked up. A ground sloth —

those two words do not prepare you for the reality: a creature taller than

an elephant when it stood, with arms thicker than tree trunks and claws

longer than hunting knives, reaching into the canopy with the casual ease

of something that had never been told it was supposed to be small. It was

peaceful. It grazed the treetops the way a gardener tends a hedge — slowly,

methodically, with no urgency and no fear. Nothing attacked Megatherium.

Not because it was armored. Not because it was fast. Because anything that

looked at those arms and those claws and that size understood, instinctively,

that the cost of trying was not worth the prize. The gentle ones are often

the most dangerous — not because they seek violence, but because when

violence finds them, they have more than enough to answer it. Megatherium

walked softly and carried the largest claws in the Resurgence.
