Armored in bone with jaws strong enough to crush anything the ocean offered — the deep water's undisputed king.
Dunkleosteus rose from the depths wearing its skeleton on the outside — a
head encased in plates of living bone so thick and heavy that it moved through
the water like a battering ram with fins. It had no teeth. It did not need
them. Its jaws were sharpened edges of solid bone that closed with enough
force to shear through shell, scale, and stone alike. Nothing the ocean
could produce was strong enough to resist that bite. Where Anomalocaris had
been the first hunter, Dunkleosteus was the first apex — a predator with
no predator above it, answerable to nothing except its own hunger. The
smaller experiments of the Eldergrowth scattered before it. Even Cameroceras,
patient and vast, gave ground. For the first time since the Primordia, the
ocean had a ruler — not one forged by divine fire, but one built by the
slow, merciless logic of survival. Dunkleosteus asked the world a simple
question: what are you made of? And if the answer was not bone, the
conversation was very short.
