A spiked tail club on an armored body — the ice age's most punishing answer to any bold predator.
Where Glyptodon was pure defense, Doedicurus added a counterargument. The
same dome of fused bone armor. The same impenetrable shell. But at the end
of its tail, Doedicurus carried a weapon — a club studded with bony spikes,
swung with the full rotational force of a body built like a wrecking ball.
Predators that learned to leave Glyptodon alone had to learn a harder lesson
with Doedicurus: not only could they not get in, but getting too close meant
getting hit. The tail club could shatter bone. It could cave in a skull.
It could turn an ambush into a retreat in a single, devastating arc. The
ice age was full of creatures that survived through adaptation, through
cleverness, through changing when the world changed. Doedicurus survived
by being an armored sphere with a mace attached to it. Evolution tried
many approaches to the problem of survival. Few were as direct, as
honest, or as brutally effective as this one.
