Wings wider than a small dwelling — one of the largest flying birds to ever ride the wind.
Argentavis did not flap. It did not need to. Its wings — wider than a small
dwelling, membranes of feather and bone stretched to impossible proportions
— caught the thermal currents that rose from the ancient Andes and carried
it upward without a single beat. From that height, the world was a map. The
herds below were specks. The rivers were silver threads. The predators and
prey that defined life on the ground were a pattern viewed from so far above
that the violence became almost beautiful. Argentavis was a soarer, not a
hunter — though it could hunt, and did, when the wind brought it close to
something slow enough to catch. But its true dominion was altitude. The sky
of the Resurgence was wider and emptier than it had been since Pteranodon
vanished, and Argentavis claimed it with the quiet authority of something
that had found the one place in the world where nothing could touch it. To
be the largest thing in the sky is to be, in a sense, the freest thing alive.
