Cameroceras

In an age of small, strange experiments, Cameroceras was the first reminder

that the ocean had not forgotten how to make something enormous. Its shell

stretched longer than the great whales that would not exist for hundreds of

millions of years — a cone of living armor that drifted through the deep

water like a slow-moving fortress. Inside, a patient intelligence waited.

Cameroceras did not chase. It did not thrash or lunge. It simply positioned

itself in the paths where smaller creatures traveled and waited with a

stillness that bordered on geological. When prey came close enough, the

strike was sudden and total. Those seas had many predators, but

Cameroceras was the first to understand something that the Primordia never

had: that patience is a weapon. That waiting is a strategy. That the

creature who moves least may be the one who eats most. The ocean was

learning, and its lessons were getting colder.
